Course Overview

A course for those working in a variety of healthcare roles who require knowledge of how to provide high quality care and support for individuals approaching the end of life, their families and carers.

What will I learn from this course?

  • To define what is Palliative Care and End of Life Care
  • To identify those patients approaching the end of life and plan ahead
  • To recognise common symptoms and their management
  • To recognise and manage palliative care emergencies
  • To increase awareness of identification / prognostication / phases of illness / illness trajectories
  • To understand ‘what is a good death’- last weeks to days
  • To understand what Advance Care Planning (ACP) is and the benefits
  • To describe how the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) relates to ACP
  • To identify how to communicate ACP with patients and families and recognise common barriers
  • To be able to understand and explain the ReSPECT process
  • To understand how to record recommendations on ReSPECT forms
